Abd El Rahman El Nachar
El-Nashar Museum

From: 0-0-0 To: 0-0-0

Abdel Rahman El-Nashar is a unique artist who has contributed tremendously to the art world in Egypt.

His self-titled museum, inaugurated by his wife, artist Zeinab Al Sageeny and daughter Architect Iman El-Nashar, after his demise in 1999, is testament to the artist’s relentless exploration of a myriad of styles, substance, media, schools: a multi layered art which amounts to an exceptionally inspirational legacy .

In celebration of the Zamalek Art Gallery’s 15th anniversary in presenting some of the most prominent Egyptian Artists, the gallery has moved all the works in the artist's museum to its venues, in an exhibition simply titled "El-Nashar Museum". Curating the entire El-Nashar collection in its own gallery space, the Zamalek Art Gallery allows us to revisit the museum under another perspective, and with a new fresh vision.

A special feature of the "El-Nashar Museum" exhibition is his "Eighth Epic" piece, on which the Zamalek Art Gallery had an entire solo show. It was the first time a gallery in Egypt, opens an entire exhibition on a single art work; indeed it deserved no less. The epic piece was truly one of a kind: It was El-Nashar's signature three-dimensional structure, a painting support made up of several elevations of wooden cubes.

Each section of the piece presented a different style, expressionist, minimalist, abstraction and figural. Additionally each style revealed a deep inherited interest of his heritage depicting various civilizations, from Ancient Egyptian to Islamic, from folk to symbolic art.

The "Eighth Epic" was El-Nashar's crowning glory, the encompassing synthesis that celebrated his entire artistic process on a technical as well as on an artistic level, whilst simultaneously tackling all the subjects that occupied his mind.

"El-Nashar Museum" boasts many epic pieces as such, starting from the artist's rare early figural works, to his final geometric abstractions. A philosopher and explorer at heart, there was no period in this artist's life or career where he felt satisfied with a single approach, making him an artist who never fell victim to a particular "trademark". Always experimenting and questioning both himself and artistic movements of his colleagues in Egypt as well as his international peer-artists abroad .El-Nashar was like an ocean of thoughts and ideas always moving, progressing and changing, only ever calm before a storm of a new inspirational discovery came his way.

An amazing talent who left us too soon, the Zamalek Art Gallery commemorates Abdel Rahman El-Nashar with a number of never before exhibited works, as well as the last Epic artwork he has ever touched, before his demise, unfinished yet mesmerising. Surrounded by his very own easel and dried up paints, this particular setting attempts to bring the viewer intimately closer to the artistic process of this brilliant artist. For an in depth understanding of the birth of the museum, a video documentary will be screened, where the artist Zeinab Al Sageeny describes the creation of museum and walks us through, the actual premises.

Zamalek Art Gallery is proud to present "El-Nashar museum", an exhibition throwing light on one of the most versatile artists Egypt has ever produced, with incredible works that were undoubtedly Avant-Garde in substance and in form .. Mesmerizing art created truly before their time.
