Days and years elapse. Places change and might even no longer be recognizable. Emad Ibrahim goes back to places he had visited before, and discovers that none of their features, carved in his memory, are there. So, he decided to look for the shadows that inhabit those places: shadows of both the places and the people who were left behind.

In his current exhibition “Shadows along the Road”, Emad Ibrahim pays tribute to average, hard-working people he came across throughout his life, including the cheese vendor, the herder, the gardener, and construction worker, among others. Those people and the stories they told constituted a major source of inspiration for Ibrahim. He listened to them and identified with their feelings that ranged between hope and despair, perseverance and abandonment, accepting the status quo, yet looking for change. Ibrahim has, for almost thirty years, depicted those captivating stories, mainly through portraits, whether full body or regular portraits.

Emad Ismail voluntarily gives up bright, cheerful colors that characterized the paintings in his previous exhibitions such as “The Orange Girl”, “El Mouled”, and “Bougainvillea”. In this exhibition, he goes back to oil colors, which he has not used for a while, and gives up his preference for depicting groups in favor of focusing on individual stories. In those stories, which are replete with emotions, he leans towards expressionism so that the paintings combine expert utilization of the grandeur of oil with the spontaneity of sketches.

The shadows Ismail paints are not just the ones people leave behind along different roads, but also those inhabiting him as he passed through the same roads. “I see details of my past life randomly scattered around me like moving shadows from which my subjects emerge as flashes,” said Ibrahim. That is possibly why his backgrounds look blurred and his subjects seem to have emanated from the background. Free brush strokes, which Ibrahim uses in sketches instead of charcoal pencils, endow the paintings with a form of dynamism that allows the main subject to be at the center of the work as the background remains out of focus. The subject, therefore, seems to have just come out from the cycle of time and is about to be sucked into it again.

“Shadows along the Road” is a retrospective exhibition, as the artist chose to describe it, yet not in the conventional way. The exhibition does not include works that represent different phases of the artist’s career as is usually the case with retrospective exhibitions, but rather summons back all topics he tackled in the past and the faces of all the people he came across in different contexts such as marketplaces and carnivals. In this exhibition, Emad Ibrahim immortalizes and identifies with hardworking people who are worn out by the hardships of life. With the same degree of perseverance with which his subjects are characterized, Ibrahim takes it upon himself to utilize his expertise in handling different materials in a way that serves the creative process at a given moment and, at the same time, create unique paintings through which he can leave a distinguished artistic impression.
