Zamalek Art Gallery is curating and organizing Gamal El Sagini's 100th anniversary retrospective event at both Zamalek Art Gallery’s venues and at Mahmoud Mukhtar Museum. The exhibition will boast the artist’s wide range of expertise, from painting and sculpture to hammered copper and ceramics.

To say that Gamal El Sagini's pieces are strong and imposing would be an understatement. Like his work, El Sagini was one of those rare men of solid and stern principles. He's quoted to have said that "he would rather throw his work into the Nile than compromise on what he believes was supreme quality" by his son, Magd El Sagini, who once assisted his father to hurl sculptures and busts into the Nile for just that reason.

At the time of Gamal El Sagini's passing in 1977, his works were not given the credit they so certainly deserved. His son Magd, 23 at the time, held unto his works for 30 more years without ever exhibiting them, never feeling quite content with how and where to show the pieces that his father had poured his heart and soul in.

When Zamalek Art Gallery expressed their genuine interest in Gamal El Sagini's works, a long and flourishing friendship began where Magd had found the place that not only loved but presented the work with all its glory, and Zamalek Art Gallery won the trust of not one but two beloved artists, father and son.

Gamal El Sagini's love for Egypt drove him to shun those who could've helped him reach fame and glory during his day, in return for his standards and his beliefs. El Sagini opted for integrity- he believed that both him and his country deserved better. This unwavering strive to perfection is reflected in his work as well as in the fact that he only exhibited once every 8 to 10 years during his lifetime. According to Magd, "Each exhibition was a search and a message - not one of his pieces was done haphazardly". All of the Gamal El Sagini’s exhibitions, of which this retrospective is the fifth, were accomplished by Zamalek Art Gallery with just that sentiment in mind.

Through his unyielding approach to perfection, Gamal El Sagini lived his life and made his art the only way he knew how: with deep love, exceptional loyalty and a passionate strive towards Beauty at all costs. Magd inherited his father’s unwavering strive towards perfection, and to the day of his abrupt passing in 2015, he did nothing short of that towards his father’s memory.

Zamalek Art Gallery is honored to continue exhibiting Gamal El Sagini's work with this inspiring retrospective in only the way his son would allow it to be shown: as the work of an amazing artist who masterfully found his way into our hearts, our minds and our heritage.
