WE THE PEOPLE 15-12-2013

I would like to offer you a vessel to explore the corners of my imagination. The pieces of this eclectic collection of paintings, photography, sculptures, and etching, mirror my everyday life. Photographic depictions of real places I’ve visited, colored and drawn over by what my mind envisioned there. Some pieces portray my favorite places, where I’ve added to the foreground the characters that live within my mind: My aunt’s kitchen, a staple family gathering spot. Magd El Sagini’s atelier, where my most cherished memories of him remain.

Reaching back to what seem like childhood memories of high school, I’ve reconnected with an art form I’ve always enjoyed; etching. Carving away to add color and shape is ironically liberating. The etched pieces in this exhibition are black and white, going back to the most basic form of art, showing emotion and skill with texture rather than color.

I've always had a hunger for learning; exploring new places and ideas. Traveling to different countries, experiencing different cultures, and meeting different people always fed my hunger. Going to Barcelona for an art residency this summer showed me Gaudi’s architecture; a novelty in my mind which resonated in my imagination. Today I am pursuing my Masters in Art at Academia D'Arte in Florence, where three years ago I completed an art course that introduced me to sculpting.

Through my journey, here's what I learned: What holds us down is not gravity, but our own twisted thoughts. My characters represent the dreamers in all of us; floating through life, filling their minds with love and compassion. Consider the dimensions we exist in. Where is your happiness asylum? Mine is with every character I've ever drawn, sculpted, or etched, as much as with the people closest to my heart.
