Futuristic Nostalgia
Alexandria 3000
City of Wisdom, Joy, and Immortality
Bibliotheca Alexandrina

In appreciation of the remarkable role art plays in the history of humanity and the prosperity of nations, the Futuristic Nostalgia group resumes the speculative path it has started and holds its third exhibition at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which has since its establishment been carrying out the mission of its historic predecessor. The old Alexandria Library was known for being a beacon of progress, enlightenment, and civilization that guided the entire world. It was through the intellectual environment the library embraced that artists, poets, and philosophers interacted with Alexandria and created of it a global epicenter of culture. This remained the case until the library was burnt down at the hands of the forces of darkness. The new library then came to the light to resume the mission of the old one and restore to Alexandria its past glory.

To make this possible, the Futuristic Nostalgia group organized this exhibition that is expected to replace the encroaching culture of gloominess, materialism, and subordination with one that embraces optimism, love of art, and authenticity as a means of extending bridges to the future and playing a role in shaping it. The exhibition, called Alexandria 3000: City of Wisdom, Joy, and Immortality, stresses this conceptual vision in all the displayed artworks. At the center of the exhibition is a bronze painting that members of the group dedicate to Alexandrians and is to remain in the library until the year 3000. The painting includes the manifesto of the exhibition and which focuses on connecting with the future and emphasizing the continuity of Egyptian history through successive millennia. The exhibition calls for restoring the original role of art in inspiring change, spreading joy, and appreciating beauty for without those life loses its meaning and civilization declines.

This exhibition would not have been possible without the support of the management and administration of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as well as that of Zamalek Art Gallery. It is noteworthy that this exhibition features a new installation that was not at the one held in Cairo. Futuristic Nostalgia will also organize a seminar to introduce the concepts and vision of the group and discuss the artwork displayed at the exhibition. The seminar will be held as part of the opening ceremony and will be attended by several prominent thinkers, artists, and critics. The input of the audience will be of extreme significance as far as the development of the group is concerned.

Alexandria might be currently suffering from several setbacks that might jeopardize the cultural and intellectual role for which it has been renowned for centuries. However, we are certain that such setbacks are not lasting and that no matter how challenging they could be they would never strip that historic city of its wisdom, joy, and immortality.
